The Edmonton Oilers' decision to let go of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway after receiving two offer sheets this offseason has sparked discussion, and GM Stan Bowman offered a candid explanation during an interview with Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

Bowman criticized the St. Louis Blues' contracts for both players, suggesting that their current level of play didn't justify the hefty deals.
"The players can probably grow into those deals, but as of today, they're way above their actual performance,"

Bowman expressed surprise that Blues GM Doug Armstrong committed over $4 million annually to Broberg. Neither Broberg nor Holloway has played over 100 NHL games, making the combined $7 million annual cap hit a significant gamble based more on potential than performance.
This outcome is poorly reflected on former Oilers GM Ken Holland, who missed the opportunity to secure Broberg and Holloway with more affordable, long-term contracts while still in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors. By failing to do so, Holland left the door open for the Blues to present high-value offer sheets, which Edmonton ultimately chose not to match.
As the Oilers move forward without these young players, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway will now have the chance to prove whether the Blues' investment in their future will pay off.
