Former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Jake McCabe has settled well with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and reports suggest that the team is discussing extending his contract.
Elliotte Friedman of 32 Thoughts Podcast mentioned that McCabe is viewed as an ideal fit for the Leafs' new culture, particularly due to his consistent performance since joining the team in 2023.
McCabe was acquired from the Blackhawks as part of a trade package along with Sam Lafferty and future draft picks. He has proven his value with strong defensive play, registering 33 points (9 goals, 24 assists) in 94 games while delivering 219 hits and ranking third in ice time on the team. His playoff performance was also notable, as he averaged over 21 minutes of ice time in the series against Boston.
The Leafs reportedly see McCabe as a priority for a contract extension, particularly with his deal set to expire in 2025. However, some argue that Toronto should consider trading him while his value is at its peak, given his affordable $2 million cap hit and the limited salary cap flexibility available to the team.

This situation is a point of contention, with decisions looming on whether to re-sign McCabe long-term or capitalize on his trade value to acquire assets.
With a limited $1.2 million in cap space, signing options aren't plentiful. While other options are being considered, Toronto will attempt to find another asset to improve its roster.
