It appears that Marner is done in Toronto
Since the Boston Bruins ended the Maple Leafs' season in Game 7 of the first-round playoffs, there has been ongoing speculation about Marner's future with the team.
Marner has faced criticism for his underwhelming performance during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which might have influenced his approach to the off-season. According to the NHL Network's Steve Kouleas, the atmosphere surrounding Marner has shifted since the season's end:
"Maybe he thinks it's time, maybe there's a place where he can go and hide if you wanna look at it that way," said Kouleas.
Unlike Captain
John Tavares, Marner might be willing to waive his No-Movement Clause (NMC) to facilitate a move. Kouleas added:
"It wasn't an emphatic no way," said Kouleas of Marner. "With Mitch... the buzz is not against a move, not saying no. Where this leads? I don't know but it's so exciting."
Marner's $10.9 million price tag might be steep for some teams, but starting July 1st, his salary drops to $775K for the season. For a 95-point winger and former Selke Trophy finalist, this is an enticing offer for many teams:
After July 1st
Mitch Marner is owed only 775K in salary for next season. The 10.9 is being quoted everywhere, while this very important actual $ # is ignored. There are so many budget-conscious teams that would love to have 95 point winger in his prime who was a Selke finalist last year. at the financial cost of what a fringe 4th liner would make. There are no other players available with that # remaining.
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, there's only a 5% chance that Mitch Marner remains with the Maple Leafs next year:
