The Columbus Blue Jackets are in the market for a new general manager after parting ways with Jarmo Kekäläinen

With no successor named yet, speculation is rife about who will take up the mantle. The team's president, John Davidson, has emphasized the importance of experience and analytical capabilities in the selection process.
In a recent media interview, Davidson mentioned the usual candidates like Marc Bergevin and Ken Holland. However, it was his reference to a potential female candidate that caught the attention of reporters. This has sparked discussions about Meghan Hunter, who currently serves as the Assistant General Manager for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Hunter's credentials are impressive and align well with what the Blue Jackets are seeking. She has a rich background in hockey, both as a player and through her family connections to Mark and Dale Hunter, owners of the London Knights. While the Blue Jackets are reportedly interested in Mark Hunter, Meghan Hunter could be an intriguing alternative.
Hunter began her career with the Blackhawks in 2016, working in hockey operations. In 2020, she was promoted to Director of Hockey Administration, with additional scouting responsibilities. By 2022, she had ascended to the role of Assistant General Manager. Her duties are extensive, encompassing salary cap management, daily operations, contract negotiations, team services, roster construction, and budgeting. She also acts as the primary liaison between the team and NHL headquarters, and collaborates closely with the coaching staff and player development team.
Losing Hunter would be a significant blow to the Blackhawks, especially during their ongoing rebuild. Her multifaceted role is crucial to the team's operational efficiency and long-term success. As Danny Wirtz, the Blackhawks' CEO, considers the potential impact, it is clear that letting such a valuable asset go would be a mistake.
The Blue Jackets are also considering other candidates such as Eric Tulsky, Matthieu Darche, and Chris McFarland. However, the likelihood of these individuals taking the job remains uncertain.
For the Blackhawks, retaining Hunter is essential. Bringing in fresh faces and innovative thinkers like her is vital for building a winning team and sustaining success in the future. Letting her move to Columbus would not only weaken their management team but also bolster a direct competitor.
