Stephane Veilleux on road to recovery after life-threatening car crash: ‘There is no room for self-pity'

Former NHL forward Stéphane Veilleux considers himself lucky to be alive and not paralyzed after a severe car accident on June 19th.

Veilleux was struck by a teenage driver who ran a stop sign, causing a collision that left him unable to move his neck. X-rays later revealed multiple fractures in his C1 vertebrae, prompting doctors to immobilize him immediately.
Thankfully, with the intervention of his former team, the Minnesota Wild, Veilleux avoided surgery that could have resulted in the loss of almost all neck mobility. He was instead placed in a halo, where he remains immobilized by four pins in his skull for at least three months. Despite the hardships, including limited mobility and being unable to lay down, Veilleux remains optimistic and grateful for avoiding a worse fate.
Reflecting on the tragic deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, Veilleux expressed empathy for their family and gratitude for his own.
"I'm focusing on gratefulness," he says, determined to face his challenges with the same resilience that defined his NHL career.
