Sean Avery's unconventional first NHL paycheck purchase.

NHL players often make headline-worthy purchases with their first paychecks, opting for luxury cars or making life easier for their families.
However, Sean Avery, known for his controversial presence both on and off the ice, chose a path less traveled for his initial splurge.
Avery, who began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2001-2002 season, didn't go for the typical athlete's first big buy.
Instead of a car or real estate, he purchased an ounce of mushrooms, a substance known for its psychedelic properties and currently considered illegal, though it is being explored for therapeutic purposes.

His purchase reflects his brash and outspoken personality, characteristics that defined his career and made him one of the most divisive figures in hockey.
Avery's antics on the ice often overshadowed his play. He was infamous for his ability to irritate opponents, amassing 247 points (90 goals, 157 assists) across 580 games, yet it was his behavior that often captured the headlines.
One of the most memorable moments came in 2008 during a game against the New Jersey Devils when Avery, in an attempt to distract goalie Martin Brodeur, faced him and waved his stick in front of Brodeur's face, obstructing his view during play.
This act led to the NHL instituting the "Avery Rule" the following day, which penalizes similar tactics with a minor 2-minute penalty.
Now retired at 44, Avery remains a polarizing figure. His choice of purchase with his first NHL paycheck underscores his disregard for how he is perceived, a trait that consistently manifested throughout his career.
Despite the controversy, Avery's legacy in the NHL is marked not only by his scoring ability but also by his unique approach to the game and the rules that govern it.
