Carey Price's candid revelation: battling alcoholism and embracing sobriety.

In a heartfelt disclosure on the UnHammered Podcast, hosted by former NHLer Brantt Myhres, Carey Price shared his challenging journey with alcoholism.
Known for his poise on the ice, Price's openness provides a stark contrast to the often-guarded persona of professional athletes. By discussing his battles, Price aims to inspire others facing similar struggles.
« I've always been kind of a good time Charlie, you know hanging out with the boys, »

Price confessed during the podcast. His casual indulgence, however, spiraled into years of alcoholism before he acknowledged the need for change. It was the intervention of his family that illuminated the severity of his condition.
« It wasn't until later, I think especially when you start bringing in a different aspect into your life, like kids, you have more responsibilities,Price reflected. At a certain point I was like 'I need to make my family my priority and my own health my priority. »

Acknowledging the negative impact his drinking had on his professional life, Price felt compelled to seek help after his performance began to suffer.
« It starts wearing on you because you're like 'Am I being a professional? Am I truly giving it [my] all? he lamented. »

This self-realization led him to check into a 30-day treatment program, which focused on self-reflection and awareness.
The trigger for Price's decision to seek help was the intense stress following the 2021 Stanley Cup Finals.
« We had just gone to the Cup Finals, we had just lost in the Cup Finals, I had just gone through a surgery, there was a lot of things going on in my life that I think pushed me over the edge as that summer went on. »

Price praised former Habs GM Marc Bergevin for his supportive approach during this turbulent period.
« Very understanding, Price said of Bergevin. We had a long conversation, an emotional one, what was said will obviously stay between us, very heartfelt. »

His wife, Angela, played a crucial role in his journey to sobriety.
« There have been times in my life where Angela was like 'You need to get control of yourself here' you know? Price admitted. »

He also acknowledged the high-pressure environment of the NHL as a potential catalyst for addiction among players.
« I think a lot of it is just dealing with stress, Price noted. Hockey in general is high performance, we need results, when you think about it you're in a very stressful situation.

So I think part of it too is being able to handle and deal with the stresses of being a high performance athlete. »

Now sober for two years, Price has found comfort in his new lifestyle, focusing on the positive aspects of sobriety.
« The further along I went along with this, you just feel more comfortable being yourself, he observed. »

Being present for his children has been one of the most rewarding changes.
« How many days of your life have you wasted feeling like that, he reflected on his past hangovers. Now I wake up on Sunday morning and I'm making breakfast for the kids and being a present dad. I'm really thankful for that time. »

As he moves forward, Price is planning a camping trip with his friend and former NHLer, Jordin Tootoo, symbolizing his ongoing recovery and dedication to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
The journey of Carey Price serves as a powerful narrative of vulnerability, recovery, and hope, setting an example for those struggling within and beyond the world of professional sports.
