In a surprising turn of events for the Chicago Blackhawks, Reese Johnson, a depth forward and restricted free agent, will not receive a qualifying offer from the team.
This decision allows Johnson to pursue opportunities in free agency starting July 1st.
Reese Johnson, known for his amiable personality and dedication, will leave a notable gap in the Blackhawks' locker room environment. Ben Pope of CST shares :
« Sounds like Reese Johnson expects to head to the UFA market this summer. You'll never find a nicer, more genuine guy in an NHL locker room; he'll be missed. »
His contributions extended beyond the ice, fostering team spirit and camaraderie.
Initially signed to a two-year bridge deal by Kyle Davidson in 2022, it seemed Johnson was poised for a longer tenure with the Blackhawks. However, the team's strategy shifted, viewing him as misaligned with their long-term goals.
Plagued by a concussion from a March clash against the Anaheim Ducks, Johnson's season was cut short, leading to his absence in 16 games and ending his playing year by April 18th.
Despite limited appearances, totaling 42 games for the season, Johnson managed to score 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) and demonstrated his physical presence with 109 hits and 42 penalty minutes.
His prowess in face-offs, boasting a 51.9% win rate, underscores his value as a depth forward.
As Johnson prepares to enter the UFA market, his skills and locker room presence will undoubtedly attract interest from other NHL teams looking to bolster their lineup with a reliable and well-liked player.
