Detroit Red Wings update: Dylan Larkin's surgery and recovery timeline.
In a significant update from the Detroit Red Wings camp, general manager Steve Yzerman has confirmed that team captain Dylan Larkin underwent surgery to address an upper body injury that marred his performance late in the season.
This development was crucial enough to prevent Larkin from participating in the world hockey championship.
The injury, which came to light during the routine end-season evaluations involving scans and X-rays, was not initially deemed serious.
However, the results indicated a need for surgical intervention. Describing the procedure, Yzerman stated:
« He had an injury, an upper-body injury that he was dealing with late in the season that we didn't really think a lot about at the time,» Yzerman explained. «
And then the end of the season, we do all of our testing and they get whatever scans and x-rays and things. He had to address that with I don't want to call it minor surgery, but he had to have surgery. »
Despite the setback, Larkin's recovery is on track, with Yzerman optimistic about his readiness for the upcoming training camp in September.
Currently, Larkin is engaged in training activities, although he has yet to resume skating or handling the puck.
« I expect he's training,» Yzerman noted during a media session about the upcoming NHL draft. «I don't think he's skating or shooting pucks yet, but I expect him to be 100 percent by training camp. »
Larkin's shortened season saw him playing 68 games, during which he scored 33 goals and provided 36 assists, amassing a total of 69 points.
Additionally, he maintained a positive impact on the ice with a +5 rating and accumulated 39 penalty minutes, averaging 20 minutes and 10 seconds of ice time.
The Red Wings faced a challenging season, narrowly missing a playoff spot in the final game, Game 82. With Larkin expected to return fully fit, the team is hopeful for a stronger run in the upcoming season, eyeing a spot in the playoffs with their captain back at the helm.
