Chicago Blackhawks bet big on Artyom Levshunov, eyeing long-term defense mastery.

In a strategic move at the NHL Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks snagged Artyom Levshunov with the 2nd overall pick, a decision reflecting the high premium currently placed on defensemen in the league.
Levshunov, hailing from Michigan State, is touted for his potential as a top-pairing defenseman, showcasing skills that could expedite his transition to NHL ice.
Despite the allure of his swift adaptation to professional play, the 18-year-old's path will detour through the AHL.
The Blackhawks' Assistant GM of Player Development, Mark Eaton, emphasizes the strategic advantage of this route.
« Being able to be hands-on every single day is a huge bonus," Eaton explained. "That is the line that we walk with our amateur prospects, is the realization that they all play for other coaches, they all play in different systems, so if we have the ability to have him in-house and our great development staff in Rockford working with him on a daily basis to start to close that gap between where he is and where he needs to go, I think it's only a bonus. »

While Levshunov might have benefited from an extended stint in the NCAA to polish his game, the decision to advance him to the AHL underscores a shift in developmental strategy for the Blackhawks.
This contrasts with their previous approach, notably with players like Kirby Dach, who were rapidly promoted to the NHL.
The strategic placement in the AHL allows Blackhawks to tightly oversee Levshunov's growth and aligns with their priorities in player development.
Should the scenario necessitate, Levshunov could join prospects like Frank Nazar and Kevin Korchinski in Rockford, ensuring he continues receiving substantial ice time and remains just a call away from the major league.
The handling of Levshunov's contract could mirror the approach taken with Lukas Reichel, potentially deferring the start date to the following year and preserving his first-year eligibility if his NHL playtime does not exceed ten games.
This meticulous planning highlights the Blackhawks' focus on player control and development, crucial for Levshunov's integration and success within the club's strategic framework.
As they bolster their defensive lineup, the investment in Levshunov's progression from a promising draft pick to an NHL mainstay exemplifies the Blackhawks' commitment to building a robust defense that could secure the team's competitiveness in the coming years.
