At 34 years old, Wilson was nearing the end of his career but was still highly regarded after spending 14 seasons with the Blackhawks, where he won the Norris Trophy in 1981-82.
In the trade, the Blackhawks received 20-year-old winger Kerry Toporowski and a fourth-round pick from the 1991 draft. They also received a second-round pick in the 1992 draft, which was later traded to the Winnipeg Jets for defenseman Boris Mironov. Wilson, who had a no-trade clause, agreed to the deal to seek a fresh start after playing under the intense leadership of coach Mike Keenan.
Wilson became the first captain of the Sharks and played two seasons with the team before retiring in 1993. Later, he returned to the organization in 2003 as general manager and was instrumental in building the competitive teams of the mid-2010s, including a run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016. He stepped down as GM in 2022 after a medical leave.
Kerry Toporowski spent most of his career in the minors, while Boris Mironov went on to have a solid NHL career, starting with the Edmonton Oilers in 1993.
