Blackhawks aim to clinch $30 million star Guentzel for power duo with Bedard
Blackhawks on the prowl for elite forward pairings.
In a bold move to bolster their top-six, the Chicago Blackhawks are eyeing major talent to pair alongside
Connor Bedard.
Speculation is rife that
Jake Guentzel could be the key piece, adding a high-caliber edge to their lineup.
According to Elliott Friedman on The 32 Thoughts Podcast, Guentzel's availability has been floated by Carolina, hinting at potential trades for a mid-round pick.
« It sounds like he's [Guentzel] available for a mid-round pick," Friedman noted. "Carolina's let everybody know that if you want to trade for his rights, it's possible for a mid-round pick." »
Guentzel, who inked a $30 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 2018, could hit the free agency market on July 1.
The buzz intensified over the weekend with David Pagnotta confirming talks between Guentzel's camp and the Hurricanes.
« Confirmed by separate sources over the weekend," Pagnotta said, "the Hurricanes have had discussions with Guentzel and his camp, led by agent Ben Hankinson, and the initial word is he probably goes to July 1. »
Despite his last AAV standing at $6 million, Guentzel's new asking price reportedly climbs to $8 milliona figure the Hurricanes find steep.
His recent performance justifies the hike, with Guentzel notching 25 points in 17 games last season, ranking third in postseason points for Carolina with nine in 11 games.
The Blackhawks are well-positioned to snag Guentzel, setting them apart from less competitive teams like the San Jose Sharks.
« I did have a couple of people say to me, San Jose is a long way away still," Friedman elaborated. "When it comes to Chicago, they were like at the beginning, and then someone said to me Chicago started to make noises like they'd like to move things along a little bit here, and I don't think it's impossible that Chicago is considering this. »
Chicago's strategy to equip Bedard with adept wingers like Guentzel could significantly enhance his sophomore year.
As the situation unfolds with Guentzel's free agency, the Blackhawks' ambitious plans may reshape their roster dynamics, positioning them for a potential deep playoff run.
As July 1 approaches, all eyes will be on the Blackhawks to see if they can secure this crucial addition.
