Gilles Leger, esteemed hockey executive, passes away at 83.

The hockey community mourns the loss of Gilles Leger, a respected figure in the sport, who has passed away at the age of 83.
Known for his extensive career spanning several key roles in professional hockey, Leger's influence was felt from the grassroots to the NHL.
Born in Cornwall, Ontario, Leger's hockey journey began at Saint Francis Xavier University, where he served as head coach from 1967 to 1972.
His early coaching career paved the way for more prominent positions in the sport, including roles with the Ottawa Nationals and the Toronto Toros in the World Hockey Association.
Leger's administrative acumen led him to the role of general manager for the Birmingham Bulls in 1976. However, it was with the Quebec Nordiques where he truly made his mark.
Joining the organization in 1979, he initially served as the director of player development, a role that saw him shaping the future stars of the team.
In 1984, Leger was promoted to assistant general manager, a position he held until 1995, contributing significantly to the team's strategy and success during this period.
His career didn't end with the Nordiques. Leger also brought his scouting expertise to NHL teams like the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Rangers.
He retired in 2020 after a distinguished career that saw him involved in nearly every facet of hockey, from university leagues to the NHL.
Leger's passing is deeply felt across the hockey community, and his legacy in the sport is indelible. His work not only influenced the teams he was part of but also provided a model of leadership and dedication in hockey.
