The news emerged on Saturday, May 18th, casting a shadow over the sport.

The official account of the 1980 US Olympic team, known as '1980MiracleTeam' on X, confirmed the loss with a heartfelt message:
It is with profound sadness that the @1980miraclehockeyteam announces the passing of our teammate and brother, Mark Wells. While there aren't many details at this time, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and all who knew and loved him. RIP #15. Many of us were fortunate to spend time with Wellsy last week at our annual @1980hockeycamp. He loved coming back to this event every year as the «Commish», reuniting with us and all the campers who have become family.

Wells, who was drafted 176th overall in 1977 by the Montreal Canadiens, had a storied career that included stints in the American Hockey League with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs and the New Haven Nighthawks. Beyond his professional achievements, he was beloved for his involvement in the hockey community, particularly through the annual hockey camp where he was fondly referred to as the "Commish."
The legacy of Mark Wells extends beyond the ice. His presence at the annual hockey camp underscored his passion for the sport and his commitment to nurturing future generations of players. As a member of the legendary 1980 US Olympic hockey team, Wells was part of a group that transcended the boundaries of sport to become a symbol of hope and resilience for many.
The hockey community has expressed its deep condolences, with many sharing their personal memories and respects online. As details surrounding his passing remain limited, the focus remains on celebrating his life and contributions to the sport.
Our thoughts are with Wells' family, friends, and all who were touched by his spirited presence both on and off the ice.
