Blackhawks legend and Hall of Fame founder Murray Costello dies at 90
Remembering Murray Costello: A pillar of hockey's international growth.
Murray Costello, a revered figure in the hockey world whose influence stretched from the NHL rinks to international arenas, has passed away at the age of 90.
While his tenure as a player was brief, his true legacy was carved out behind the scenes, where his strategic vision and leadership propelled the sport forward on numerous fronts.
Costello's journey in professional hockey began in the 1953-1954 season with the Chicago Blackhawks, after an early career at St. Michaels Major.
Despite a modest startscoring only 5 points in 40 gameshis path was destined for greater heights beyond the ice.
His player career concluded after stints with the Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings, totaling 162 games with 32 points and 54 PIMs.
However, it was his post-player career that defined his monumental impact on the sport. Returning to Hockey Canada in 1979, Costello leveraged his experience to revamp Canada's national programs.
Notably, he established a U21 team in 1982 and played a pivotal role in launching the first IIHF Women's Championship in 1990.
His vision extended to the administrative merger of CAHA and Hockey Canada in 1994, and his expertise was further recognized through his involvement with the IIHF council until his retirement in 2012.
Under his stewardship, women's hockey found a champion who was instrumental in its growth and recognition on the global stage. Emma Weller, reflecting on his contributions, noted:
" You don't always see who the people are that are advocating for your sport, but I know that Murray Costello was one of them. "
Costello's accolades mirror the breadth of his influence. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder in 2005, he also found his name etched in the IIHF Hall of Fame and the Canada Sports Hall of Fame.
His receipt of the "Order Of Hockey in Canada" is a testament to his indelible mark on the sport.
Murray Costello's legacy is a testament to a career that transcended the typical trajectories of those involved in hockey.
His strategic insight and dedicated advocacy have not only shaped hockey's present but will continue to influence its future for generations to come.
His passing marks the end of an era, but his contributions will endure, a lasting legacy to a true builder of the game.
