Blue Jackets place former 1st round pick on waivers
This move marks another step in their efforts to refine their roster and improve their overall performance.
Brendan Gaunce, a 30-year-old forward standing at six foot 3 and weighing 214 lbs, was drafted in 2012, first round, 26th overall by the Vancouver Canucks, according to eliteprospects.com. Gaunce's career has seen him play for the Canucks, the Boston Bruins, and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Known for his strong two-way play, Gaunce is recognized for his competitive nature and effective net drive.
This season, Gaunce split his time between the Cleveland Monsters and the Blue Jackets. In the AHL, he played 46 games, scoring nineteen goals, providing 20 assists, and accumulating 39 points along with 37 penalty minutes.
Currently, Gaunce is coming off a two-year deal worth $1.525 million with the Blue Jackets. His ability to contribute on the bottom six, along with his penalty-killing skills and defensive capabilities, makes him an intriguing option for other teams. General manager Kyle Davidson might consider picking him off waivers or waiting until his contract expires to offer a new deal.
Given Gaunce's league minimum salary, Davidson could secure him with another league minimum offer, providing valuable depth and experience to any team willing to take the chance
